Sponsored in part by:
The mission of the Virginia Tech High-End Computing Challenge is to encourage graduate and undergraduate students in the US and throughout the world to pursue research topics in high-end computing.
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
High-end systems and applications enable scientific discovery. Challenges abound for the high-end computing (HEC) community. Systems software and applications must be made scalable to hundreds of thousands of processing elements sharing petabytes of data across complex communication networks. Meanwhile, several government agencies have identified a shortage in personnel trained in the use and design of high-end systems and applications.
The Virginia Tech High-End Computing (VT HEC) Challenge will promote the involvement of graduate and undergraduate students in research to improve high-end systems and applications. Authors are invited to submit technical papers describing original, innovative approaches that increase the speed and efficiency of high-end computing systems and applications. This year's challenge has been purposely broadened to include any novel research approaches, techniques, tools, software, etc that improve state-of-the-art HEC applications and systems.
AWARDS
The exact number and type of awards will vary with the number and quality of submissions. In 2006, first prize and honorable mention prizes were awarded. Cash prizes of $1000 will be awarded to the best submissions in each of two categories: graduate and undergraduate. Cash prizes of $500 may be awarded to several "honorable mentions" across categories. Other awards for innovation may be given at the discretion of the program committee.
ELIGIBILITY
Submissions must be student-led and may be submitted in graduate or undergraduate categories. Student-led means the student is lead author for the paper. To be eligible for the undergraduate category, the lead student must be an undergraduate. Women and members of other under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to participate. All work must be original, though simultaneous submission to conferences/journals is acceptable since submitted papers will not be published. Student authors of award-winning papers may be invited to present their work in a mini-symposium held at Virginia Tech.
IMPORTANT DATES
Submitted manuscripts should not exceed 12 single-spaced, single-column pages in 10-12 point font, including figures, tables, and references. Submissions must be made electronically as Adobe PDF files to the following email address: vthecc@cs.vt.edu .
