Snow scattered in West and across northern Plains and Great Lakes
(AP) -- Snow was scattered through the mountains of the West and across the Great Lakes on Thursday, and rain fell on parts of the Plains and Mississippi Valley. Low pressure in the West helped produce isolated snow showers during the afternoon in northern sections of California and Nevada, eastern Oregon, Idaho, Utah, western Colorado and a few places in Wyoming. Most of the snowfall was light, but moderate snow fell in the areas of Jerome, Idaho, and Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. While snow fell inland, light rain fell along parts of the coast from northern California into Oregon and Washington's Puget Sound area. Up to 8 inches of snow was possible by Friday morning in parts of North Dakota and Minnesota. Farther east, a band of light snow started in North Dakota and extended across northern Minnesota into Wisconsin and northern Michigan. The snow continued eastward across Ontario into northern New York state and parts of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Across the center of the nation, mostly light showers were scattered along a line curving from eastern Texas across Oklahoma into eastern Kansas, Missouri, southeastern Iowa, northern Illinois and southern Michigan. A few thunderstorms developed within the area of showers. Showers were expected to spread eastward during the night across the Ohio Valley and lower Great Lakes into the southern half of New England. Thursday's temperatures around the Lower 48 states ranged from a low of 8 at Cut Bank, Montana, to midday readings of 84 at Chesapeake, Franklin, Fredericksburg, Petersburg and Suffolk, Virginia. The lowest wind chill was 1 above zero at Minot, North Dakota, and Grand Marais, Minnesota. Copyright 2003 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
