On July 17, 1996, TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747 bound for Paris, exploded shortly after takeoff from New York's Long Island, killing all 230 people on board.
In 1997, two different juries convicted Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols for their roles in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. McVeigh was found guilty of muder and sentenced to death while Nichols was pronounced guilty of involuntary manslaughter and escaped the death penalty.
