Mastermind on the run

Less than a week after the deadly terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States declared Osama bin Laden, mastermind and leader of the al Qaeda terrorist network, "wanted, dead or alive." In the past year and a half, bin Laden evaded U.S. authorities during the war in Afghanistan and disappeared from sight in December 2001, surfacing since then only in audiotaped messages. After the capture of alleged al Qaeda operations chief Khalid Shaikh Mohammed in January 2003, the search for bin Laden intensified.
