Activities that Influence Change

The ADVANCE programs run events and activities that can help promote change to advance women in science and engineering. Information about those events and activities - such as workshops or panels- are posted on their websites they are cataloged here.

Balancing Work and Personal Life Workshop, Hunter College

Hosted at Hunter Collge for the Gender Equity Project, multiple workshops were held from February - May 2004 on topics such as self-promotion, leadership, and equality. Agendas, activities, and reading materials are listed.

Advance Dean and Department Chair Toolkit, University of Michigan

This document is a letter to the deans and department heads at the University of Michigan in Science and Engineering. It presents the results of an assessment that they participated in with a finding that most people at the university were unfamiliar with the available initiatives.

Gender Schema and Science Careers Tutorial, Hunter College

Hunter College - City University of New York’s Department of Psychology designed four tutorials titled Gender Schemas and Science Careers. They can be downloaded on this webpage and played with voice over narration. Transcripts and questionnaires are also available.

Department Transformation Grant, University of Washington

The University of Washington’s ADVANCE program responded to the need their departments were reporting: funding to create career opportunities and culture change. They created a grant and had departments submit proposals in 2004.

Gender Reports, Kansas State

Kansas State is collecting data annual from their science, engineering, and mathematics department heads for the NSF. Some of these include tenure promotion, salary, and space. This page has a complete list of the data indicators.

Workshop on Mentoring in Engineering, Stanford School of Engineering

Hosted at Stanford University, “This two day workshop provided a forum on the needs, goals, methods, and best practices for mentoring engineering students interested in an academic career and young faculty beginning such a career.” Workshop structure, goals, and committee can be found on this webpage.

Institutionalizing Transformations, University of Michigan & Virginia Tech

This presentation, “Creating Changes that Last: Institutionalizing ADVANCE Transformations”, covers a study done in which interviews were conducted at ADVANCE institutions. The effort was to look at things that have and have not worked, and things that have surprised the participants.

Hosted by WISELI, training for hiring diverse faculty and staff is available. It “provides faculty with information, advice, and techniques that will help them run more effective and efficient search committees, diversify their applicant pools, their interviewed candidates, the offers they make, and ultimately the new faculty they hire.” Resources are found at this website.

2004 Case Western Reserve University Provost’s Leadership Retreat, CASE

Each year CASE hosts a leadership retreat. In 2004 their retreat was held for the first time with presentations given by people such as CASE’s president, Edward M. Hundert. Speakers, agendas, presentations, and pictures can be found here.

2005 Case Western Reserve University Provost’s Leadership Retreat, CASE

Each year CASE hosts a leadership retreat. In 2005 their retreat was themed: “Things that work”. They keynote speaker was Riane Eisler who is the international bestseller of The Chalice and the Blade. Speakers, agendas, presentations, and pictures can be found here.

2006 Case Western Reserve University Provost’s Leadership Retreat, CASE

Each year CASE hosts a leadership retreat. In 2006 their retreat was titled: “Leading Change: Creating Tomorrow’s University”. The event was expanded from the previous year to include all the departments of the Weatherhead School of Management and all the ARts and Sciences departments. Energeia 2002: Georgia Tech's NSF ADVANCE Annual Report Magazine, Georgia Tech

Each year Georgia Tech posts their annual report in a magazine called Energeia. This is their first magazine and it outlines what they were able to accomplish in the first year: networking opportunities, new work-family processes, an assessment of promotion, and other quantitative and qualitative data collection.
